In this session, the presenter will update the audience on the current energy situation and directions for achieving greater levels of sustainability. He then focuses on renewable energy resources and technologies, and shows completed projects to demonstrate what works in different settings All-electric net zero and near zero energy projects with solar power and geothermal HVAC are presented in illustrative case studies with real-world results. Architects and other design professionals are encouraged to attend. The intent is to answer any and all questions the audience may pose to make their projects as sustainable and inexpensive to operate as possible using the technologies and concepts presented in the program.
The NYC E-Designation Program regulates such items as: HazMat Contamination, Noise Attenuation & Air Quality impacts. Impacts on building design include: vapor barriers, noise attenuating materials and exhaust stacks. Attendees will be “walked” through the Office of Environmental Remediation (OER) e-designation process. Learn what design elements are required to obtain OER and DOB approvals.
The course starts by assessing the need for vegetated roofs. The key benefits of vegetated green roofs are examined with a cross reference to LEED categories. These benefits are further examined by briefly reviewing tools that are available to evaluate life cycle savings.
Topics covered include: green roof components, their assembly and construction, structural analysis, performance standards, vegetation free zones, irrigation needs, water capture & reuse, and retrofit projects.
Our water bodies suffer from combined sewer overflow and our eco-systems are polluted and need repair. The need for green streetscapes is arising throughout the U.S.; a move that involves a multi-disciplined approach that includes: architects, landscape architects, urban designers, transport planners and others. Understand how enhanced stormwater management methodology can be used to develop green infrastructure projects. Several case studies will be explored.
Understand the criteria used to evaluate building materials. Time-proven techniques for effectively researching products and comparing manufacturers will be presented. Examples from area LEED Certified projects will be used to illustrate some of the points covered. Identify new trends in building product standards and how they can be used to sponsor further innovations.

Unlike others, Jörg Breuning is one of a few people on earth who actively shaped the beginning of the modern green roof industry in Europe/Germany more than 4 decades ago. In addition, he introduced green roofs to North America in 1999. Thus, he has over 40 years of experience in two fundamentally different markets for green roofs and green walls.
Today, Jörg Breuning’s skills in biophilic design and sustainable engineering goes beyond green roofs and include specialties with living plants like: Green Walls, Green Rail Road Tracks, natural swimming pools, advanced composting technology, PV / Solar combinations with vegetation, plastic-free green roofs, and solutions for circular economy through urban mining – the highest level of sustainability and resilience.
Jörg: ” There are an increasing number of masterminds for sustainable design, influencers for environmentally friendly solutions, and initiators for Cradle 2 Cradle principles. There are only a few that can convert these innovations into reality on a small or large scale. I leave the trendy, fancy buzz words to others and aid on realization.”
