The definition of high-performance buildings is expanding to include significant attention to human health impacts of buildings. While health has always been a part of sustainability, exciting new data and findings are driving rapid change to a health-motivated perspective. This program will offer a description of the recent research driving increased emphasis on human health in our communities; and will describe how certification programs are addressing human health in communities, including LEED, Enterprise Green Communities, National Green Building Standard, WELL Building Standard, and Fitwel. Case studies of representative projects will be examined.
Upon completion of this program, the attendees will have an understanding as to why human health concerns should be part of a sustainable design project, in order to produce an environmentally-friendly solution; gain an appreciation for how important community health is becoming in building & facility design; comprehend which health interventions may be most cost-effective for a given human health concern, and for the health of the entire community for various project types (tools for implementation are presented; and be aware of the importance of human health in our communities.

She has certified over 30,000 green dwelling units in 10 states under LEED for Homes and other programs. Maureen works to tie human health to energy efficiency and green building, and her projects have been early adopters of Active Design Guidelines, Fitwel, and the WELL Building Standard. Under her leadership, SWA is an eight-time recipient of EPA’s Indoor airPlus Leader Award for rating healthy homes.
